Stepping Out Of The Boat
There’s a line from scripture that has stayed with me for most of my life: “now we see through a glass dimly…”
For years, I interpreted that as a limitation—like clarity was something always just out of reach. Something reserved for later. Maybe even something I wouldn’t fully understand until the end of my life.
In the meantime, I felt like I was supposed to figure things out. Make the right decisions. Be certain about what God was asking of me.
But that hasn’t been my experience.
More often than not, the most meaningful moments of growth in my life haven’t come with clarity—they’ve come with invitation. Subtle ones. Disruptive ones. The kind that don’t fully make sense but ask something of you anyway.
I’ve been reflecting on the story of Peter stepping out of the boat into the storm. Not because it was logical. Not because it felt safe. But because something in him recognized the invitation—even in the uncertainty.
And I’m finding that this is often how the spiritual life works.
We don’t get full clarity.
We get glimpses.
And somehow, those glimpses are enough to take the next step.
In my latest piece, I explore what it means to trust those invitations—especially when you can’t see clearly, don’t feel ready, or wish you had more certainty.
